What Does a Medical Assistant Do?

With the many different careers offered today, the ones that are well known in the medical field would be doctors, surgeons, nurses, dentist and such. But has it ever crossed your mind; as to who actually does all the smaller jobs? All fields have got that person behind all the work who remains behind and gets the work done making all go well and smoothly.

Well, in the field of medicine, this is where medical assistants come in.
Medical assistants are the secretaries of clinics and hospitals who are gifted and a step above ordinary receptionist as they can read prescriptions and professionally carry out clinical task. More often than not, they would be required to be certified to work, but this depends on the company.

Today, there are not only courses available, there are also online course which you could take up for convenience sake. Having said this, you must be wondering what exactly such a position calls for. Well, the job scope is divided into two which is work at the front desk and in the back office.

At the front desk, you would be required to carry out secretarial work such as filling up forms, answering calls and making appointments. Aside from that, you would also need to keep in contact with a variety of insurance companies associated with the patients and get all faxes and letters done. Also, the responsibility to order supplies and convert the patients written charts into electronically kept data would be all yours.

In the back office, you would have to deal with the more technical task, so this is where you would have to apply your knowledge and experience as you would be faced with jargon terms and practical activity. Your job as a medical assistant would be to guide the patients into the checkup room and perform all the basic routine steps like height and weight measurement, jotting down the patient’s pressure levels, temperature, filling up the medical history forms along with listening and questioning the patient.

Furthermore, it would be your job to assist the doctor with all medical procedures such as drawing blood and giving injections. It would also be advisable that you stay in the room while the doctor examines the patient so that you would be able to gain knowledge through listening and you also get all the information required to create the patient’s profile.

In addition to all that has been mentioned, assistants who aren’t certified should not be allowed to work in the backroom on a large scale as they might know what they’re doing. It wouldn’t be wise to allow an untrained assistant to remove stitches, swab cuts and bandage a sprain ankle - in case it isn’t done properly and cause harm to a paying patient.

On average, this position is at high demand due to the many medical companies and branches sprouting up all over the place. With the right training and enough experience, you could be yielding a good salary of about $21,373 per year.
